We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Reverend Joseph Marciano z”l.
For more than forty years, Joseph was the steady heart of Schara Tzedeck synagogue, the one who showed up for every person, every need, and every moment. Whether it was helping someone get to a doctor’s appointment, delivering food for Shabbat, driving to the airport, arranging a meal for a shiva, referring someone for medical care, training a bar mitzvah student, or reading Torah, Joseph was there.
He served not only as the Funeral Director of our community but was a true friend and caregiver to Schara Tzedeck. Joseph brought warmth and meaning to our shul and enriched our community beyond measure.
We send our deepest condolences to his wife, Simone and to his children, Dovid (Michelle), Armand (Marni), Avraham (Natalie), and Claire (Josh) and to his many grandchildren.
The funeral will be held this Thursday, October 30th, in Israel.
Schara Tzedeck have established the Joseph Marciano z”l memorial fund to honour Joseph’s legacy in our community. To make a contribution, please visit this link, and select the Joseph Marciano z”l memorial fund.
May his memory be for a blessing.
Community Announcement – Congregation Schara Tzedeck
We wish to provide some updates and brief words of eulogy and comfort upon the loss of Reverend Joseph Marciano z”l.
So many have called, messaged and spoken with us about how profoundly they have felt the loss of Rev. Marciano. Joseph was buried in Israel on Thursday morning in the presence of Simone, his children, family and over 40 current or former residents of Vancouver. Rabbi Baumol and David Marciano, among others, offered beautiful eulogies expressing Joseph’s kindness, friendliness, his unique ability to be empathetic and comforting in times of loss, and of the constancy of his presence and service to the Kehilla and to the broader Jewish community of Vancouver. In truth, it is impossible to capture what Joseph gave to this community in a few minutes, let alone a few lines. They spoke of Joseph’s profound love for Simone, his family and Torah and for Am Yisrael.
As a community, we will gather for a memorial event for Joseph’s Shloshim, the 30th day, which will be on Thursday night, November 27 at 7:00 pm at Schara Tzedeck.
It is a time-honoured tradition to complete a section of Torah study as a broader community for the Sheloshim. As Joseph was our Torah reader, we have chosen a Soyuz (completion of study) for the 5 books of the Chumash. Please register to study for one of the Parshiyot here.
In consultation with the Marciano family for those who have not already made a donation, the family requests that further donations in Joseph’s memory be directed toward the Chaim Medical Resources Foundation, which helped Joseph over the past couple of months.
May his memory be for a blessing
