Listening to our Souls: Group and Individual Spiritual Direction with Rabbi Haviva Ner-David

Rabbi Rev. Haviva Ner-David is a spiritual director who specializes in modalities that facilitate going deeper and listening to your inner voice — such as dream work, inner child work, nature soul retrieval work, soul collage, and the general spiritual direction techniques of sacred listening, asking open questions, holding space in non-judgment, and reflecting and reframing. The belief in spiritual direction is that we are all whole and hold the answers to our own questions. The role of the spiritual director is to accompany you on your journey and help you hear the voice of your own soul.

In the course of your time together, you will meet as a group to hear from one another about your spiritual paths and what you are seeking in the spiritual direction relationship. Rabbi Haviva will explain more in depth what spiritual direction is about, and she will present the various specific modalities in which she specializes – all of which aim to give voice to your soul. Dream work is a method of helping you hear the messages of your own (sleeping) dreams; inner child work helps heal sacred childhood wounds by letting your inner child speak; nature soul retrieval work helps you become more attuned to the messages to be heard from the natural world to which we are integrally connected; and soul collage uses the art form of collage to look deeper into your soul.

Another tool in which Rabbi Haviva specializes is ritual. Often after hearing what our soul is telling us, a ritual to mark a spiritual or emotional transition or transformation is in order. Rabbi Haviva is the founding rabbi at Shmaya: A Mikveh for Mind, Body and Soul, where she holds mikveh workshops and accompanies individuals in their ritual immersion experiences. She combines her spiritual direction work with mikveh by helping people create unique ceremonies and mikveh experiences based on what comes up in spiritual direction. Although this is a virtual group, if it seems applicable, she can assist you in creating such a ceremony for yourself to be done at an institutional or natural mikveh (a lake, ocean or spring) near you. Or if a different type of ritual seems more appropriate, she can help you create that as well. Although of course you are invited to immerse at Shmaya as well.

After our first group meeting, Rabbi Haviva will meet individually with each member of the group once every two weeks for spiritual counseling sessions custom-made to fit each participant’s special needs and vision for your time together. Those who are more interested in specific modalities can focus on those, while those who are more interested in general spiritual counseling are welcome to choose that option. Or a combination of approaches may seem best. Rabbi Haviva is open to what arises and evolves.

In the final group session, you will share about your experiences in individual spiritual direction with Rabbi Haviva. The benefit of the group framework is that in hearing of others’ experiences, we gain more insight into our own journeys. Rabbi Haviva welcomes anyone who wishes to continue in the spiritual direction relationship with her to do so after the boot camp is over. Or even to continue the group framework.

Rabbi Haviva is the author of three spiritual memoirs (the third not yet in print) and believes that we are each on this earth to live our own unique journey and be the author of our own unique story — if we are bold enough to follow our hearts.
