Sad News – Stephen Joel Hurwitz z’l

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Stephen Joel Hurwitz, brother of Beth Israel member Julie Seelig, at the age of 82 in Brookline, Massachusetts.

We send our heartfelt condolences to his siblings, Michael Hurwitz (Nancy) of Boston, MA, Dr. Alfred Hurwitz (Marjorie) of Saratoga, California, and Julie Seelig (Michael) of Vancouver, as well as his many nephews and nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

He was buried beside his parents on Friday, December 13 at 1:00 pm in Boston.

Stephen was severely mentally challenged all his life, but at a time when kids like him were sent to institutions, his mother was among the first parents who had the courage to defy medical protocol by keeping him at home. The four siblings grew and prospered together in the same house. His mother, Pearl Hurwitz, became the first President of the Massachusetts Association for Retarded Children. Thanks to the wisdom and humanity of this brave woman, Stephen had the best possible life he could have.
