Debbie Havusha’s Blog: Bless is More – #3!  June 2019

           Bless is More – # 3!  June 2019

By Debbie Havusha

Life in the lane is not fast, and I like it this way! There is very little traffic heard from our new laneway except for the morning sounds of the trucks that collect either our garbage or our environmentally friendly green bins. There is also the familiar scene of the citizens of our city that meander the alleys searching for their plastic and glass windfalls enduring the battles of their urban lives.
Our prized hazelnut tree that I wrote about in my previous blog is still battling with the fungus. However its’ other parts are full of the many new green offshoots that bring life and vitality to the sum of its’ parts.

Did you know the many roots of the word ‘part’? I just learned that from the word ‘part’ we can build the following words: partition, participate, partial, partisan, partake and partner. Each of these words maintains the basic idea of part or portion of the whole. It is often difficult to discern the roots of words in the English language.

Most words in Hebrew come from a root, ‘shoresh’ and generally are composed of three letters. In Hebrew, roots are the unit central to the meaningful construction of the whole language. I love the Hebrew language and am impressed again and again in discovering roots in words that connect to each other in multi-dimensional ways. From my love of teaching Hebrew I have recently launched a program called ‘Hebrew in the Lane’ where students come to our laneway; an alternative classroom setting for speaking opportunities in Hebrew around the dining room table. I facilitate the discussions with handouts and games and bring the Hebrew language alive with experiential action filled learning.

Life in the lane now has another offshoot……‘Hebrew in the lane’. If you are interested in ‘participating, contact me and I will inspire you in finding your roots.

Yours in blessings!

Debbie.
