Debbie’s Blog- Leonard Cohen’s Passover
Leonard Cohen’ Passover
During this time of Passover we are compelled to ask the questions: What then? What now? What next? We remember our bondage and explore interpretations of Passover.
Last week I attended an inspiring lecture about Leonard Cohen offered by the knowledgeable Matthew Gindin. Here I learned about the moving words of ‘The Story of Isaac’, understood the 3 contexts of uttering Hallelujah, and emotionally connected to Leonard Cohen’s recent song: ‘Born In Chains’(2014).
“I fled to the edge of the mighty sea of sorrow
Pursued by the riders of a cruel and dark regime
But the waters parted and my soul crossed over
Out of Egypt, out of Pharaoh’s dream”
Through his music and lyrics, Leonard Cohen sends us on many soul searching melodic journeys. While reading our Passover Haggadah, we will have the opportunity to once again, cross over!
